The Ferrari 360 is finally receiving the recognition it deserves as one of Ferrari’s best modern classics.
Most Ferraris arrive to us as instant icons, while others take some time before people finally realise just how good they actually are and the Ferrari 360 sat waiting for its time to shine.
When it was launched in 1999, it had a difficult job ahead of it. The car it replaced, the beautiful F355 had already become one of the most loved Ferraris of the modern era. It was stunning, raw and unmistakably analogue, the F355 set the benchmark of how it should be done.
The 360 approached the problem in a different direction, rather than chasing nostalgia, Ferrari built an entirely new platform. The chassis was made from aluminium rather than heavy steel, making the car much lighter and far more rigid than its predecessor.
It was a huge step forward in engineering and marked the beginning of a completely new generation of Ferraris.

WHAT THE 360 gained in tech, it never lost its character
At the heart sits a naturally aspirated 3.6 Litre V8 producing around 400bhp. The engine revved to over eight thousand RPM and delivered the kind of soundtrack that defined Ferrari’s V8 era. There were no turbos spoiling up and creating lag and nothing artificial about the response as every movement of the pedal to the floor was answered instantly by the engine sitting right behind you.
Performance figures were very impressive when the car was new and they still hold their weight today as the 360 could reach zero to sixty in about 4.5 seconds and carried on to a top speed of just beyond 180 MPH, more important than the numbers was the way the car felt to drive.
The steering felt alive, the chassis was beautifully balanced and compared to the earlier Ferrari’s, the 360 felt like you were always in control, it was stable and gave more confidence on the road. It was still a Ferrari but it one that you could actually enjoy regularly rather than keeping it garaged.
Three main versions were produced during its production run. The Modena coupe arrived first, shortly followed by the Spider, which combined the same performance with the added drama of open top driving pleasure. Later came the Challenge Stradale, a fast road/track version inspired by Ferrari’s racing program, it was lighter, louder and sharp, the Stradale has since become one of the most desirable Ferrari’s of its generation.
One of the most spoken about aspects of the Ferrari 360 today is the choice of gearbox. Buyers had the option to choose between a traditional six speed manual with Ferrari's iconic gated shifter or the company's early F1 paddle shift transmission and at the time many buyers opted for the F1 system as it was the latest technology derived straight from the Formula 1 team.
Two decades later, the market has shifted into reverse as enthusiasts have rediscovered their appreciation for the manual gearbox and the organic experience it brings. As a result, manual cars have become increasingly sought after and always command a premium price.

A FERRARI FROM THE LAST ANALOGUE ERA
The Ferrari 360 has now found an interesting place within Ferrari’s timeline. It’s modern enough to be a daily driver and relatively approachable when compared with the earlier Ferrari’s, yet somehow, it still belongs firmly to the analogue era. It’s a simple mid-engined Ferrari V8 that was built during the golden era of when cars had no turbos or hybrid systems, a pure drivers car.
For buyers looking to find the best examples, Japan has one of the largest appreciations for Ferrari’s and you’ll be amazed at what you’ll find in the auctions as many have found themselves here due to the strong following of the brand. These cars are often maintained regardless of cost and found with low mileage and ownership. Japanese auctions are the go to when looking for a new Ferrari as the inspections are famously detailed and record the most minor cosmetic imperfections before the car is offered for sale.
As a result, it’s not unusual to see a few 360’s appearing through the auctions on a weekly basis and through Autoselecta, we monitor them every day and always highlight the most interesting cars before they reach the auction floor. If it’s the Ferrari 360 you’ve been looking for, then registering your interest means you’ll be notified when one appears in upcoming auctions, so you’ll have the opportunity to review the inspection reports and underbody images to decide whether it’s worth your while placing a bid.
More than twenty years after its launch, the Ferrari 360 has grown into its much deserved reputation. It represents a moment in time when Ferrari embraced modern engineering while still preserving the raw nature that made sure their cars were special.
The Ferrari 360 is one of those cars.
