A DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO NISSAN R35 GT-R

The Nissan R35 GT-R remains one of the most iconic Japanese performance cars ever produced, combining supercar performance with everyday usability.

Here was a 4 seat, twin turbocharged, all wheel drive machine from Nissan that could humble Ferraris, embarrass Porsches and totally reset expectations of what a performance car could do for money. It was brutally effective, relentlessly over-engineered and completely unapologetic.

Here we are, nearly two decades on and the R35 has matured into something far more interesting. It’s no longer just the giant killer, it’s a modern JDM icon with a surprisingly broad range of variants to suit everyone's taste and a clear trajectory towards being one of the best future classics to buy and keep.

Understanding the model range is essential if you’re seriously considering buying one.

Early cars 2007 to 2010

The original cars established the formula. They were hand built 3.8 twin turbo V6’s producing around 473 BHP, a rear mounted dual clutch gearbox and an advanced ATTESA all wheel drive system that could vary its torque distribution in milliseconds.

They were much rawer than the later examples. The gearboxes had a more mechanical feel, the cabin was simple and the suspension was firm and unapologetic.

Early cars represent very strong value but always require careful inspection. Gearbox software updates, history and maintenance records really matter most here. A well maintained early R35 is still devastatingly quick in today's modern world.

2011 Facelift Model

Power now increased to around 523 BHP, the suspension tuning was improved. The interior quality was a major leap forward. The car became more complete and liveable without losing its edge.

For many buyers, this is the absolute sweet spot between purity and usability.

The Black Edition

The Black Edition adds lightweight forged alloy wheels, a carbon rear spoiler and the addition of Recaro seats. It feels slightly sharper in character and tends to hold its value very well because of its visual presence and enthusiast appeal.

The Premium Edition

This is more of a comfort focused specification with softer suspension calibration, full leather interior and a slightly more refined feeling when driving the car, it was for buyers who wanted everyday usability without having to sacrifice on performance. The Premium Edition works brilliantly.

The Track Edition

Track Editions focus their attention on a stiff chassis set up and weight reduction, the suspension components had an update in the later models and Nismo derived parts helped sharpen the car dramatically. These cars are less common and attract buyers who want driver engagement over comfort.

Nismo Editions.

The Nismo sits at the top of the range and represents the most focused factory R35 available. In early form, it produced around 591 BHP and later versions increased that figure even further and also introduced extensive carbon fibre body panels, bespoke aerodynamics, revised turbochargers and a track bias suspension set up.Owning a Nismo R35 is not just a higher powered GT-R, its fundamentally, a serious machine, not to be played with. It’s firmer, louder, more engaging and the pinnacle of the range. They command a premium, especially when accompanied with low miles and a 4.5 grade and above. The good news is, these are only going up in value, so try and get one while you can.

T-Spec and Special Editions.

In later years, Nissan introduced limited runs on models such as the T-Spec, which combined mechanical updates with an exclusive colour pallet and other specification details. Colours such as the infamous Midnight Purple and Millenium Jade have become the most desirable colours to try and find.

Special Editions are increasingly sought after because the production numbers are limited and global supply is snapping them up so if you’re looking to buy one, now is the right time.

What to look for when buying your R35

Service history is everything here as the VR38 Engine is seriously robust, but only when maintained properly. Neglect can be a very expensive lesson you don’t want to learn so always double check its maintenance records.

1. Transmission servicing should also be documented.
2. Brake wear is an important factor.
3. Suspension components on earlier cars can benefit from a refresh.
4. Modified cars should be assessed carefully, some upgrades are excellent but might require extra knowledge when servicing and may affect the resale value.

Many Japanese market cars benefit from careful ownership and lower mileage compared to your local market examples. Auction grading and underbody images are very valuable when assessing if there's any rust or signs of repair history.

Why the R35 matters…

The R35 represents the last era of purely combustion powered Japanese supercar engineering before electrification and low emissions reshaped the automotive industry.

It’s brutally fast, even by today's standards. It’s usable and it’s engineered with discipline. It has a presence that never needed the attention of theatrical doors opening, or an Italian badge, it simply delivered.

Here at Autoselecta, we see between 25 and 30 GT-R’s pass through auctions every single week. That amount of volume gives us a strong view of pricing trends, specification desirability and market movement, without relying on guesswork.
